We often imagine a pedagogical space as a classroom—desks, a whiteboard, an instructor at the front. But this definition quickly falls short.
In a recent dialogue with Kimberley Sutherland (Modern Languages), we explored a broader view: pedagogical space is not confined to physical settings. It includes virtual environments, informal moments, and even the internal mental space learners bring to an experience.

Beyond Physical and Virtual
Pedagogical space can be:
- An online session or discussion forum
- A commute spent listening to course material
- A moment of reflection sparked by everyday experience
What matters is not the location, but the conditions for learning. “You can be physically present… but that doesn’t mean learning is happening.”
Attention and “Bandwidth”
A key insight is that pedagogical space is shaped by attention. Learners may appear engaged in a classroom yet be mentally elsewhere. Conversely, online environments can foster deep reflection—especially when students are given flexible ways to participate. Recognizing fluctuating “bandwidth” (cognitive, emotional, situational), and consider effective learning spaces:
- Allow for re-entry and flexibility
- Offer multiple ways to engage and express understanding
- Acknowledge that attention is not constant
Intentional Design
Pedagogical spaces don’t happen by accident—they are designed.
This includes:
- Sequencing of activities
- Use of tools and technologies
- Opportunities for movement and interaction
- Creating a sense of safety and inclusion
Even small choices—like incorporating movement or offering alternative formats for participation—can transform a space.
Opening the World
At their best, pedagogical spaces extend beyond the course itself. They invite learners to connect ideas to lived experience—what they notice, feel, and encounter in the world around them.
We concluded our discussion with an invitation, rather than a fixed definition, consider this a prompt:
- Where does learning happen for your students?
- How do you design for attention, flexibility, and engagement?
- How might your course extend beyond its “space”?
Pedagogical space is not simply where we teach. It is something we intentionally create—together.
